The Shaw Can Carpentry Modular Hinge Jig is designed to be compact, versatile and accurate. Instead of being permanently fixed to a long length, each jig simply screws onto a piece of 18mm timber (story rod). When you're finished, remove the screws and store the jigs in your toolbox—saving valuable space in your ute or workshop.

Compact Storage

Unlike traditional full-length hinge jigs, these jigs detach from the timber base when not in use. Simply unscrew them from your 18mm story rod and store the jigs themselves—no more trying to fit long, awkward templates into your vehicle.

One Jig for Any Door Height

Position the jigs exactly where you need them on your story rod. Whether you're hanging a standard internal door or a custom-height door, you can space your hinges wherever required as long as they are evenly spaced.

No fixed hinge locations.

Important: For the story rod system to work correctly when flipped between the door and jamb, all hinges must be spaced perfectly evenly. Layouts with two hinges positioned close together at the top are not compatible with this system.

Route the Door and Jamb with Perfect Alignment

Once your jigs are attached to the story rod, route the door first, then transfer the same story rod to the jamb. Because the hinge positions never change, your door and jamb remain perfectly aligned without measuring every hinge individually.

Easy Micro Adjustments

Long mounting slots make fine-tuning your hinge positions quick and simple. If a slight adjustment is needed, just loosen the screws, slide the jig to the desired position and retighten. This allows for precise micro adjustments without having to remove the jig or start your layout again, helping you achieve an accurate fit every time.

Works on Existing Installed Jambs

Need to cut a hinge into an existing jamb with an external door rebate with an architraves already fitted?

Simply remove an individual jig from the story rod and use it by itself.

Built Around Readily Available Materials

The jig is designed to mount to a standard piece of 18mm timber, most skirting/ arc and door jamb sizes, making replacement story rods quick, inexpensive and easy to source.

Compatible Router Bit

For the correct fit and easiest setup, we recommend using the Shaw Can Carpentry TCT Template Router Bit.

This bearing-guided router bit is specifically matched to our Modular Hinge Jigs and features:

• 6.35mm (1/4") shank

• 12.7mm (1/2") cutting diameter

• 11.1mm cutting length

• Tungsten carbide tipped (TCT) cutting edges

The router bit is sold separately and is compatible with both the 85mm and 100mm Modular Hinge Jigs.

Other template router bits may be suitable, but the bearing and cutter dimensions must match the jig correctly to produce the intended hinge recess.
